A powerful start to the Employability Seminar at Iscte!

On 28 December, students from the Erasmus Mundus Human Response and the Master in Humanitarian Action at Iscte took part in an enriching first-semester Employability Seminar — a full day dedicated to exploring career paths, building professional competencies, and gaining real-world insights into the humanitarian sector.

The morning opened with Joana Azevedo (Master in Humanitarian Action & Human Response Coordinator) and Luis Mah (Master in Development Studies Coordinator), who introduced key strategies for humanitarian job searching and navigating humanitarian funding opportunities.

We were thrilled to welcome Joana Batista (UKMed), who led dynamic working sessions on identifying core humanitarian competencies and building a strong humanitarian professional profile.

In the afternoon, Joana Sá (Mentor Initiative) delivered an inspiring talk on the skills, competencies, emerging job requirements, and professional profiles shaping today’s humanitarian landscape — in Portugal, across Europe, and globally. Her reflections on current employment challenges and trends offered valuable guidance for students preparing to enter the field.

The day concluded with an engaging and informal conversation featuring humanitarian professionals sharing their career paths and lived experiences:
Joana Batista (UKMed), Sofia Carvalho de Almeida (UNICEF Int.), Monica Frechaut (Independent Consultant), Deniz Mardin (MSF), Francica Volta (KIMOV), and Maria do Carmo (KIMOV).
Their contributions sparked meaningful dialogue and provided students with invaluable perspectives from the field.

Ana Laura Santos (Human Response Professor), Joana Azevedo and Cláudia Pereira (Human Response Coordinator) facilitated the seminar.

🙏 A warm thank you to all speakers, partners, students, and teachers who helped make this seminar a rich and motivating learning experience. Events like this empower the next generation of humanitarian actors to step forward with confidence, curiosity, and purpose.

🙏 A special thank you to the structures that supported and made this event possible:
International Relations Office (Iscte), Iscte – School of Sociology and Public Policy, Iscte – Business School, and CIES-Iscte.
